Urinary Incontinence

Leaking is a very common, but not a normal symptom! About 50% of women experience urinary incontinence including prenatal, postpartum, and active women who have never given birth before.

Only a small percentage of them seek proper care. Although it  can be quite embarrassing to initiate discussions about urinary symptoms but most people don’t know that treatment by a pelvic floor physical therapist is available!

Urinary incontinence can be a result of weakness or even overactivity/tightness of the pelvic floor muscles.

There are two types of urinary incontinence:

  1. STRESS INCONTINENCE
Loss of urine with activity such as coughing, sneezing, walking or running

  2. URGE INCONTINENCE
Sudden, intense urge to urinate followed by involuntary loss of urine

While Kegels are an important exercise, they might not always be the answer to your symptoms. You should see a pelvic floor physical therapist to evaluate and determine the root of your symptoms. They can provide conservative management and help you retrain your pelvic floor muscle through internal pelvic floor work, biofeedback, breathing techniques and specific exercises.

If you are experiencing urinary incontinence and seeking treatment, our physical therapists at both location in Greenwich, CT or Manhasset, LI help you!
